SummaCare Center

Signet Development was selected to develop the 100,000 SF Class A office building that serves as the downtown headquarters for its primary tenant, SummaCare Health Insurance, one of the country’s largest health insurance plan providers.

The building is situated at the site of the former Portage Hotel at Main and Market Streets. The history of the site includes recognition as the founding location of the United Rubber Workers Union (“URW”), which was established in 1935 when Akron was renowned as the “Rubber Capital of the World.”

The design of the building’s interiors include prominent displays depicting the heritage of the location, not only as the URW founding site, but also as a major thoroughfare, or “Portage,” before Ohio was settled as a territory. This fast-track downtown central business district development project was designed, constructed, and occupied within a fourteen-month period.

Signet provided all development, design, finance, and construction services for this fast-track project. They also handled all equity and secured the construction and permanent debt financing to build the project. Signet Development owns and manages the project through a long-term master tenant lease with SummaCare.
